English parent guide

Good English tuition makes feedback precise enough to use.

English progress is difficult to judge when every weakness is described as ‘needs more detail’. Effective tuition identifies whether the barrier lies in reading, interpretation, evidence selection, analysis, structure, expression, accuracy or examination timing.

01

Establish the component and text

English Language and Literature require related but different habits, and specifications vary. The teacher should know the awarding body, component, set texts where applicable, assessment objectives and examination series.

  • Language or Literature component
  • Awarding body and specification
  • Set text or anthology
  • Coursework and examination balance
02

Separate comprehension from analysis

A learner may understand the passage but struggle to choose evidence, name an effect without explaining it, or write a clear analytical sequence. Tuition should identify the broken link rather than supply a paragraph to memorise.

03

Use models as tools—not scripts

A model can reveal structure, precision and effective choices. The learner should compare it with their own work, identify why it succeeds and then make a fresh decision in a different question. Reproducing a generic answer is not transferable writing skill.

04

Feedback needs a revision step

Marking is most valuable when the learner acts on it. A teacher might ask for a sharper topic sentence, a better selected quotation, a more exact explanation, a restructured paragraph or a shorter timed rewrite—then check the revision.

  • Specific rather than generic comment
  • A manageable revision instruction
  • Opportunity to redraft
  • Later check in unfamiliar work
05

Measure more than the grade

Look for stronger evidence selection, clearer reasoning, greater control of paragraphs, fewer repeated technical errors and better decisions under time. These changes often become visible before a full grade boundary moves.
